Photograph to Raise Funds for Charity (Canada) [Sep. 5th, 2011|11:15 am]
Hello!
Privet!
Bonjour!

If you're in Canada's capital anytime soon, please consider visiting the show Sept. 9. Proceeds from the auction of the exhibited works will be donated to Blues in the Schools, a high-school music program that puts working musicians together with interested students.

Give this blog post (by an Ottawa Citizen editor) some traffic if you can, thanks for looking...Darren

Kathy

There's one real problem with the idea of being content and generally hunky-dory with life, for me at least: When things are going well, it's easy to settle down in one's nest and get comfortable. Change and provocation is less desired when bills are paid and relationships healthy and worry is far away.

I've never had much to complain about, especially witnessing some of the tragedies that seem to be happening more often lately to many others. Or perhaps it's just how it seems. But there's always the need to actively poke my consciousness with a (proverbial) cattle prod to remain hungry, interested, interesting. Get up...get to work...

Still working, although this image is rather old. Found it...and found it rather lyrical...hope you like...

Aaaah...summer (it's been awhile hasn't it?) [Jun. 23rd, 2009|09:15 am]

Dasha by Darren Holmes
Photographs of Dasha Astafieva, Kiev, Ukraine

Jhayne, I finally updated (thanks for the nudge awhile back : ) I just needed something to say...

It's a lovely thing watching a little one grow and become a unique human being, full of will and curiosity. And to be part of a bond that a child has only with their closest caregivers. The energy given to our little one has been energy well-spent, as she is happy and curious and full of her own little personality now, a little over a year on. As a child I was given an amazing childhood, was lucky to have it, and now can pass on. Thanks mom and dad.

I've been starting an email newsletter of late. If you'd like to take part please feel free to sign up at www.darrenholmes.com?newsletter. It would be great to hear your voice. Below is the first one, hope you enjoy.

We met Dasha Astafieva in the middle of a Ukranian spring heat wave. Our first shots were in the apartment rented for us, but life outside in the parks and alleys
of Kiev were more enticing.

I had brought flowers for our shoot. I had no idea what we would use them for. Chantal suggested laying them out on the grass, halo-like. Dasha dove into the photographs,
expressive, theatrical. She was very kind and polite and a quiet soul. I wonder what she thought of this man and his wife from Canada, with just a camera and a bag of clothes.

After an hour or so, we were done. On our way back to the apartment we saw a group of young women dressed in traditional Ukrainian clothing. Embroidered headdresses and gowns,
Bast shoes. They were beautiful. Past the group walked a couple of very chic, provocatively-dressed women of present-day Kiev. The difference between them was jarring, one
may not be sure of which century they were in.

Since our meeting, Dasha Astafieva has become very well-known amongst fans of a certain magazine—That many only read for the articles...

Since this my first 'newsletter' message I'll mention my professional goings-on over the past year or so below. Future news will involve some upcoming exhibitions and additional features on the site.

More to come from these travels and others. And feel free to write (here, email or through the website).

Hey! If you'd like, visit/join my Facebook Page.
